Refineries in the Puget Sound area (including Blaine, Anacortes, and Tacoma) process crude from Alaska, Canada, and North Dakota to supply the region, with significant tanker traffic moving through the Salish Sea. And one of the major cities on the Puget Sound include Seattle.
Major Hubs: Washington’s five refineries, including major facilities like BP’s Cherry Point in Blaine, are crucial for the West Coast’s fuel supply.
Tanker Routes: Alaska North Slope oil is transported by tanker vessels down to Puget Sound, CA, and Hawaii.
Supply Lines: Washington refiners use a mix of pipeline, rail, and ship to move both domestic and foreign crude oil.
Local Refinement: While some oil is shipped through the area, much of the oil arriving via ship is meant to be refined locally into gasoline and diesel for the Pacific Northwest.
The Port of Seattle is actively monitored for maritime commerce, while the wider Washington/Salish Sea area is a hub for oil transit and terminal storage.
