In this 18 August 2026 published video, host geophysicist Stefan Burns reports about a seismic swarm of 500 plus events currently shaking the city of Granada and nearby villages in Spain, just days after a Total Solar Eclipse passed over the country which was the first of three solar eclipse paths to hit Spain in 18 months. Based on the historic record, this is the strongest earthquake swarm to strike the Granada Basin in decades and it is possible this is foreshock activity for a higher-magnitude event.

A series of recent earthquakes—including a notable magnitude 5.2 tremor near Otura with subsequent aftershocks—has struck the Granada province in southern Spain, causing minor structural damage and light injuries.

An initial strong tremor and subsequent swarm of smaller seismic activity shook the region around Granada. At least three people sustained minor injuries from the shaking. Emergency services and local authorities are currently inspecting affected buildings for structural integrity.
